We Endorse the Candidates
Democrats for a Safer Santa Monica
1. Clean and Safe City
The City of Santa Monica is in crisis. The city’s policies are misaligned with the fundamental needs of the community.
Santa Monicans United believes that our community should be safe and clean, with parks and public spaces available for all.

We advocate for policies that clean up our streets, parks, and beaches and work to ban needle exchanges in or near public spaces and schools.

2. Address the homeless crisis
Allowing human beings to die alone on our streets is neither humane nor compassionate.
Santa Monicans United believes city policies must effectively address the challenges of mental health and substance abuse among Santa Monica's transient population. We are against initiatives that encourage maintenance and/or expansion of substance abuse.
We believe the city must demand that neighboring jurisdictions do their fair share to address homelessness rather than continue to simply facilitate movement of these individuals into and out of Santa Monica.
3. Prioritize Public Safety
Santa Monica has one of the highest crime rates in the United States.
The City must provide our local Law Enforcement and Fire Department with the necessary resources to safeguard residents and businesses.
Santa Monicans United believes an immediate increase in permanent sworn Santa Monica police officers to at least 250 is required. The current authorized level of 228 is only 6.5% higher than it was 20 years ago(!) while safety challenges in our city have multiplied.
Santa Monicans United believes that the City must enforce all available statutes to discourage illegal and harmful behavior.

California municipalities that are UNSAFE!
Fact 1
Fact 2
You have a
1 in 20
chance of becoming a victim of either violence or property crime in Santa Monica
4. Preserve Rent Control
We are firmly committed to maintaining Santa Monica’s signature rent control and tenant protections.
In order to increase the number of affordable units available to Santa Monicans, we believe that the City and local developers should prioritize accessing local, state, and federal grants and programs, as well as adding ownership units, to increase the number of affordable units within developments.
5. Pathways to Affordable Home Ownership
We support pathways to affordable apartment and condominium unit ownership as part of our housing affordability platform.
6. Protect Our Commercial Spaces and Infrastructure
Incentivize growth and maintain existing commercial spaces and infrastructure that support and help grow our traditional source of subsidies for resident services, especially sales and hotel transient occupancy taxes.
Fact:
The City Council voted to demolish Parking Structure #3 which was critical infrastructure for the Third Street Promenade.
The proposed replacement use of a homeless shelter and low income housing could have been located anywhere in the city.

This decision was taken while our iconic Third Street Promenade continues to struggle.

Now the Santa Monica City Council is talking about tearing down another garage, Parking Structure #1.
7. City Fiscal Responsibility
The City of Santa Monica is in crisis. The city’s policies are misaligned with the fundamental needs of the community.

Santa Monicans United wants an agile and accountable city government driven by the needs and well-being of the community and long-term financial stability.
